Monday, January 12

Teacher
Pre-K
Invite an elected official or local celebrity to come to read a book with a group of children. Invite the media to attend.
Parents
Pre-K
Read a story about an official in your community, such as a police/sheriff officer or fireman with your child.

Pick an author to feature, reading several selections throughout the week.

Go to Florida Teen Book Map to participate in the Florida Teen Book Map Project for Adolescent Literature. There is a list of Florida authors who write for adolescents and a map showing where the authors reside. Your students can recommend books too!

Let your teens or tweens catch you in the act of reading! Encourage them to read at home.

Ask your students to illustrate and write a narrative passage detailing a favorite part of one of the selected authors’ books.

Assist your child in calling someone on the phone and reading a passage from your library book to them.

Read a picture book aloud to your students. Go to Alternative Teen Services for ideas on how to use picture books in your classroom. Have your students create audio books for elementary school students by taping their read alouds of the picture books.

Share a thought provoking newspaper article with your teen and discuss the topic of the article with him/her.

Use cartoons to teach. Take newspaper comics, white out the words and have students fill them in.

Select a favorite author and read books by that author during the week. Learn about the author, display his/ her picture

After reading a story together, ask your child to dictate his/her favorite things about reading together and post the list on the front of the refrigerator.

Ask your students to share their illustrations and passages with a buddy - then rewrite a new ending for their friend’s passage. Seeing how different views and experiences can effect what we write. Read aloud link:

Assist your child in sending an email to the author you are reading from or locate their blog or Facebook page and leave them a message about the books you are reading.

Hold a book drive and donate books to an elementary school, a homeless shelter, or an organization that provides services to children.

Do some winter cleaning! Together with your teen, gather books from your shelves that you would like to donate to a charitable organization to provide reading material to those that otherwise might not have access to print.

Open a “Book Hospital” during the week, so children can bring books that need some TLC. Dress as a doctor and /or nurse and make necessary repairs to the books.

Re- read the favorites list from Thursday and ask your child to draw a picture of one of his favorite things about reading together, posting this on the refrigerator as well.

Make a class book of all of the students’ stories to share in the classroom library.

Encourage your child to write a thank you note to their classroom teacher, expressing how much they have enjoyed this week of Literacy!
