Ongoing Events
  • Enjoy a library atmosphere on the 17th floor in the common area ~ please bring your lunch and a book, or take your break and read anytime during Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! (Just Read, Florida! will provide the chocolate!)
  • Book Drive ~ please bring a NEW book to donate to a school or a child in need. Boxes will be positioned in the lobby.
  • Literary Luminaries ~ pick from a list of Florida authors on the Leon County Library’s blog to enjoy in the New Year ~ http://flalib.blogspot.com/2008/03/2007-florida-book-award-winners.html
  • Make a New Year’s resolution to read every day!
  • Enjoy Public Service Announcements (PSAs) promoting literacy from statewide student contest winners and DOE leadership all week on the Florida Knowledge Network (FKN).
  • Enjoy display tables with literacy tips from various partner organizations.
Monday, Jan. 12
  • E-mail from Commissioner Smith encouraging DOE participation in the week’s events.
  • Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! kick - off event in the lobby with Lt. Governor Kottkamp, Commissioner Eric Smith, K-12 Chancellor Frances Haithcock, FDLE Assistant Commissioner Ken Tucker, and Evan Lefsky, Executive Director of Just Read, Florida!, announcing the week’s activities, 10:00 AM -11:00 AM. Refreshments will be served.
  • Visit the Leon County Library Bookmobile behind DOE, 10:00 AM -2:00 PM. (Must have picture ID with current address to get a library card.)
Tuesday, Jan. 13
  • Leo Lovel, North Florida author, shares and reads passages from his writings, 17th floor common area, 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM. Cookies will be served.
  • Leon County Spelling Bee ~ Leon High School, 7:00 PM.
  • High School Quiz Show parent program at Rickards High School at 6:00 PM. (All district high school parents and students invited!) School districts and schools may want to set up a Families Building Better Readers, Mysteries in the Middle, or High School Quiz Show parent programs during this week or through January and February. Please contact Heather Warfel at 850.414.6499 or to get this process started.)
Wednesday, Jan. 14
  • Governor Charlie Crist, Education Commissioner Eric Smith, State Board of Education member Peter Boulware, and Evan Lefsky, Executive Director of Just Read, Florida!, will promote literacy and announce the statewide PSA contest school winners at Ruediger Elementary, 1:00 PM.
Thursday, Jan. 15
  • Spotlight on DOE authors and poets on 17th floor common area, 12:00 noon -1:00 PM. Refreshments will be served.
  • Mysteries in the Middle parent/student program at Montford Middle School, 9:30 AM -11:30 AM (All middle school parents invited.)
  • Meet in the 17th floor common area if you are interested in starting a book club in 2009, 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM, hosted by a long time book clubber, Patty Ceci!
Friday, Jan. 16
  • Children of DOE read and perform in the 17th floor Library common area, 11:30 AM -1:00 PM. Refreshments will be served.
