Announcing the Fourth Annual Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! 2012 "Take the Lead and Read!" Events and Contest.

Join us in celebrating the successes of Florida's schools and students, by participating in the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! "Take the Lead and Read" campaign. Administrators, teachers, students, and parents are all leaders and can take the challenge to lead others into success.

Students may participate in the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! PSA contest centered around the new theme of "Take the Lead and Read". With the support of partners such as the Daytona International Speedway and Scholastic the Just Read, Florida! Office is able to "Rev Up" the challenge to read by bringing a race car to schools across the state. Be on the lookout for the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Race Car in your area.

Join other Florida schools on Monday, January 23, 2012 for the Million Minute Marathon with a new goal of 20 MILLION minutes.

The book used for this year's Million Minute Marathon will be: "How Much is a Million?" by David M. Schwartz, pictures by Steven Kellogg

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida 2012 Events:

  • Monday, January 23, 2012- students from Sarasota County will join First Lady Ann Scott and author Peggy Nolan as they kick off the weeks events with students from Sarasota Middle School. Students will also kick off the Million Minute Marathon - giving us a jumpstart to our 20 Million Minute Goal!
  • Tuesday, January 24, 2012 - students from Orange County will participate in the "Horse Tales Literacy Project" . Students will experience the "Black Stallion Show" as well as various literacy center activities.
  • Wednesday, January 25, 2012 - PSA contest winners will be announced at the Daytona International Speedway.
  • Thursday, January 26, 2012 - "Authors Across Florida!" authors will visit classrooms all across the state, encouraging and motivating students to read their favorite stories as well as encourage them to explore their talents and write a book.
  • School districts will collect and submit their Million Minute Marathon data- striving to reach 20 MILLION!
