Celebrate Literacy Partners!
We are also proud to announce several fantastic partners have joined us to celebrate literacy throughout Florida the week of January 24-28th. Thank you to Scholastic, Barnes and Noble Bookstores, Lexile, Inc., the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation, the many Law Enforcement Officers partnering with us across the state and the many state agencies and organizations who are contributing to the success of our statewide events.
Celebrate Literacy Statewide Events
We hope you’ll join us for one or all of our statewide events next week where we’ll be highlighting a love and enjoyment of reading for all ages!
- Monday, Jan. 24: Celebrate Literacy, Florida! Kick-off Event in Miami
- What: Florida author Edward Bloor, “Taken,” will be on-site to sign books and discuss his work
- Where: Barnes and Noble Bookstore, Kendall Village West, 12405 N Kendall Drive, Miami, Florida
- When: 6:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, Jan. 25: Million Minute Marathon with Florida’s First Lady
- What: Hosted by the Duval County School District and First Lady of Florida Mrs. Ann Scott, the Million Minute Marathon is a statewide event where educators and students across Florida will be encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes. We’ll tally the total number of students and minutes read across the state with a goal to reach One Million Minutes! Read more (Students are encouraged to read anything from books and magazines to e-readers and newspapers. When done, teachers can submit the total amount of minutes read per class to their District Reading Coordinator, who will in turn submit the total # per school to the Just Read, Florida! Office.)

- When: 10 a.m.
- Million Minute Marathon Data Collection Sheet (Excel, 34KB)
- Wednesday, Jan. 26: Community Volunteer Reading Effort
- What: Volunteer Prekindgarten Providers, law enforcement and public health volunteers throughout the state will be reading to students of all grade levels in addition to special author visits arranged by Florida school districts
- Mulrennan and Wilson Middle School in Hillsborough County- Joan Kaywell, author of Dear Author: Letters of Hope will visit in support of Celebrate Literacy Week. Ms. Kaywell will share her insight on authorship and her inspiration for writing.
- VPK classrooms will participate in a simultaneous reading of Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle.
- Thursday, Jan. 27: Literacy Week Student PSA Contest Winners Announced
- What: The winners of the statewide PSA (public service announcement) literacy contest will be announced and displayed on the Florida Knowledge Network. Winning entries will receive Barnes and Noble gift cards (1st place $1,000, 2nd place $500, 3rd place $250) in addition to books donated by Scholastic Books.
- Where: Florida Capitol, 400 S. Monroe Street, Tallahassee FL
- When: 10:00 a.m.
