Just Read, Florida! 2010 Summer Professional Development Institutes

We are pleased to announce an exciting summer professional development opportunity for reading coaches, teachers, and administrators. The Just Read, Florida! 2010 Summer Professional Development Institutes will be conducted in six locations across the state during the summer months. Since space is limited, in order to build training capacity within districts, we have asked district reading contacts to initially forward registration information to those who will later train others in the district on the content presented. The institutes will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during June, July and August. Please contact your district reading contact if you wish to attend any of the tracks listed below:
  1. K-5 Program Specific Professional Development (PSPD) (Tuesday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    The K-5 PSPD is designed for teachers and reading coaches to promote teaching that effectively combines curriculum fidelity and needs-based instruction. Participants will leave with an understanding of the overall design, content and instructional procedures of the core reading program in use in order to promote classroom teaching that effectively combines curriculum fidelity and needs-based instruction. The objectives of the PSPD are to:
    • Provide view of overall design of curriculum
    • Foster more effective use of reading program
    • Additional resources from the Florida Center for Reading Research
    • Program to Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR)
    • Promote fidelity of instruction
    • Provide supports for needs-based instruction
  2. K-2 Reading Intervention Academy (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This academy is designed for grades K-2 teachers and reading coaches. The K-2 Intervention Academy focuses on four main topics: a brief overview of what research tells us about interventions, the use of data in planning interventions, the “how” of an intervention lesson, and the “what” of an intervention lesson. It provides teachers with practical, hands-on knowledge that they can take back to their classes for immediate implementation. The use of data and planning interventions components of the training will be driven by the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR).
  3. 3-5 Reading Intervention Academy (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This academy is designed for grades 3-5 teachers and reading coaches.   4. 6-12 Reading Intervention Teacher Academy (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This academy is designed for reading intervention teachers, content area teachers who provide reading intervention, and reading coaches who are K-12 reading certified, reading endorsed, or who have completed CAR-PD. The academy will be practical and hands-on, providing training on the use of data to plan intervention driven by the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR), instructional decision-making, and differentiated instruction.
  5. New K-5 Reading/Literacy Coaches Academy (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This revised academy targets new and experienced grades K-5 reading coaches and provides training in the use of data, the Response to Intervention process, and incorporating Lesson Study in the role of the coach. This practical training will provide coaches with the tools they need to work more effectively with administrators and teachers in their schools to improve teacher practice and student achievement.
  6. New 6-12 Reading/Literacy Coaches Academy (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This revised academy targets new and experienced grades 6-12 reading coaches and provides training in the use of data, the Response to Intervention process, and incorporating Lesson Study in the role of the coach. This practical training will provide coaches with the tools they need to work more effectively with administrators and teachers in their schools to improve teacher practice and student achievement.
  7. New 9-12 Reading/Literacy Coaches and Course Specific Teachers Academy (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    The targeted audience for this academy includes new and experienced grades 9-12 reading coaches who will be paired with teachers of specific content courses that will be outlined during the registration process. Course specific dialogue for integrating literacy strategies applicable to the course will be presented and shared by master teachers, content specialists, coaches and participating teachers. Teachers and coaches will plan lessons and units using these strategies, and others, through the coaching process.
  8. Grades K-5 Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) Master Trainer Track (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This track is intended for district staff, reading coaches, and lead teachers interested in becoming a master trainer for the K-5 Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR). This will prepare participants in turn to train teachers in their school districts.
  9. Grades 6-12 Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) Master Trainer Track (Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This track is intended for district staff, reading coaches, and lead teachers interested in becoming a master trainer for the grades 6-12 Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR). This will prepare participants, in turn, to train teachers in their school districts.
  10. K-5 Administrator Introductory Track for the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) (Tuesday from 8:30AM to 11:30AM)
    This training will provide principals with information regarding the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR), including how the assessments are administered, how data can be used, and the reports available on the Progress Monitoring and Reporting Network (PMRN).
  11. 6-12 Administrator Introductory Track for the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) (Wednesday from 8:30AM to 11:30AM)
    This training will provide principals with information regarding the new assessment system, including how the assessments are administered, how data can be used, and the reports available on the Progress Monitoring and Reporting Network (PMRN).
  12. K-5 Advanced Administrator Track for the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) (Tuesday from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.)
    This training is intended for grades K-5 school and district administrators with experience with FAIR administration. The training will provide detailed information on the score types and the PMRN Reports that are most useful for interpreting assessment data, monitoring progress, and planning instruction based on student needs.
  13. 6-12 Advanced Administrator Track for the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) (Wednesday from 1:00PM to 4:00PM)
    This training is intended for grades 6-12 school and district administrators with experience with FAIR administration. The training will provide detailed information on the score types and the PMRN Reports that are most useful for interpreting assessment data, monitoring progress, and planning instruction based on student needs.
  14. Families Building Better Readers (FBBR) (Tuesday from 8:30AM to 11:30AM)
    This train-the-trainer session is designed for district staff, reading coaches, and elementary school staff to provide a dynamic reading workshop for parents and students. After completing the training participants will be able to:
    • Teach parents how to prepare their child for successful reading practice at home
    • Teach parents ten research-based reading activities they can do with their children to improve reading performance
    • Provide an engaging learning experience for all participants
  15. Mysteries in the Middle/High School Quiz Show (Tuesday from 1:00PM to 4:00PM)
    This train-the-trainer session is designed for district staff, reading coaches, and secondary school staff to provide a unique and effective reading workshop for parents and students. Participants will learn how to:
    • Teach parents how to prepare their children for successful reading practice at home
    • Provide parents with resources that promote life-long literacy
    • Promote positive partnerships between families and school
    • Teach middle school families “invisible” mental strategies that will help middle school readers
    • Teach high school families key information about reading facts
  16. 6-12 Career and Technical Education in Reading (CATER) (Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30AM to 4:00PM)
    This summer’s CATER training will provide professional development for state certified career and technical education teachers who have completed CAR-PD. The purpose of this academy is to help teachers better understand how reading intervention is implemented in their classrooms, including changes in instructional practices and curricular modifications. As part of this pilot, CTE teachers completing this academy may serve fluent Level 1 and 2 students in reading intervention through their CTE courses. This will be the first three days of a 150-hour professional development requirement for these teachers who will work to complete their Reading Endorsement over the course of the 2010-11 school year

*These are the tracks that will be initially offered at all locations; however, if there is not interest in a particular track at a particular site the track will not be provided.

*No professional development track will be held on Monday or Friday at any venue.
