Ongoing Events All Weeks
  • Statewide Read for Department of Health (DOH) Campaign begins ~ volunteers from DOH reading in grades K-2 Florida classrooms from a book entitled James Wakes Up to School Breakfast.
  • Law Enforcement officers in Florida school districts will read a book to students entitled Police Officers by Paulette Bourgeois in elementary schools across Florida (Florida Highway Patrol, police departments, sheriffs’ departments and officials from Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.) More than 50 schools in more than 15 school districts will receive visits from these officers.

Monday, Jan. 12
  • Kick-off Ceremony for Just Celebrate Literacy, Florida! week in the Turlington Building Lobby, Tallahassee, 10:00 AM to10:30 AM ~ Lt. Governor Kottkamp, Education Commissioner Eric Smith, K-12 Chancellor Frances Haithcock, FDLE Assistant Commissioner Ken Tucker, and Evan Lefsky, Executive Director, Just Read, Florida! will be presiding.
  • Sheila Veatch, DOE teacher liaison, will be at Clearview Park Elementary in Pinellas County with Sgt. Terri Hubble, St. Pete Police Department, who will be reading to students.
Wednesday, Jan. 14
  • Awards Ceremony conducted by Governor Crist, Commissioner Smith, State Board of Education member Peter Boulware, and Evan Lefsky, Executive Director, Just Read, Florida! at Ruediger Elementary School in Tallahassee in order to promote literacy and present awards to Public Service Announcements statewide school winners ~ 1:00-1:30.
  • “What’s Working In Reading” Event for Legislative Staff and Business Partners, 5:30 PM in Tallahassee ~ by invitation.
  • K-12 Chancellor Frances Haithcock will read to students at Riley Elementary School in Tallahassee on Friday, January 16th.
  • Jean Lamar, Florida Teacher of the Year, will visit Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Orlando and Horizon Middle School in Osceola to promote Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! and conduct read-alouds. She will be in these schools from 8:00 AM to approximately noon.
